More Than a Market: The People Who Make It Special
When you enter The HAPCAP for Health Market, you'll find volunteers stocking shelves, neighbors filling their carts, and children stopping to browse a small bookshelf tucked inside. Every person walks through the doors for a different reason. Spend a morning there, and it doesn't take long to see that no two stories are the same.
Food is at the center of what we do, but it's the people who make it special. Whether someone is giving their time, shopping for their family, or welcoming guests through the door, each person has a story. Those stories remind us why this work matters.
For Emma Johnson, serving others has become a way to grow both personally and as part of a larger community. She traveled from South Carolina with her church's Builders for Christ mission team, a group that spends each summer helping communities through construction projects and local outreach.
While part of the team worked on a building project, Emma spent the week volunteering with local organizations, including The Market. "Sometimes you don't know what other people are going through," she said. "Going out and being part of the community helps those who need help."
The experience has impacted her in ways she didn't expect.
"It allows me to get out of my comfort zone," Emma said. "Not only is it helping those who need help, but it helps me grow in the ways I know I need to."
That spirit of service helps create a welcoming place for everyone who visits, including neighbors like one local mother who appreciates being able to choose the foods that work best for her family.
Her son has special dietary needs and only eats certain foods. At traditional food pantries, receiving a pre-packed box sometimes meant taking home items her family couldn't use.
"What I like here is that you can shop for yourself," she said. "If someone gives me a box full of things we can't use, I end up taking them to blessing boxes. Here, I can choose what my family will actually eat."
It's a simple difference, but one that gives families more flexibility, reduces waste, and allows people to shop with dignity.
Behind the scenes, volunteers and staff see those moments every week. For AmeriCorps member Katie Swing, serving as The Market's pantry coordinator has been a chance to put what she studied in graduate school into practice every day.
"I did public administration for my master's degree, and we talked a lot about helping communities," she said. "Here, I get to see tangible results. I'm handing somebody something they need."
Some of her favorite moments have nothing to do with groceries.
After discovering boxes of donated children's books, the team set up a small bookshelf inside the market. It quickly became a favorite stop for young visitors.
"Helping the little kids pick out books has been so fun," Katie said. "It's really sweet."
These moments happen every day, quietly reminding us that building a stronger community isn't always about grand gestures. Sometimes it's stocking shelves. Sometimes it's lending a hand. Sometimes it's helping a child choose their next bedtime story.
That's what makes The Market more than a place to pick up groceries.
