In 1996, Hocking . Athens . Perry Community Action completed building the Southeastern Ohio Regional Food Center in an effort to wage war against hunger in this economically depressed part of the state. This unique, state-of-the-art facility houses two vitally needed feeding programs for men, women and children throughout our communities: The Senior Nutrition Central Kitchen and the Second Harvest Foodbank of Southeastern Ohio.
Meals-On-Wheels
The Central Kitchen provides Meals-On-Wheels, Monday through Friday, to the homebound elderly. It also provides daily lunches for children participating in the Head Start Program in the three counties as well as to seniors choosing to eat at one of the senior centers in Athens and Hocking counties. Over 1200 meals are prepared to ensure that the elderly and children receive a nutritionally balanced meal each day. The Central Kitchen also offers a temporary self-pay meal service to anyone convalescing after returning home from the hospital.
Meals are prepared by experienced cooks in a state-of-the-art kitchen and are delivered to clients by trained staff in "Hot Shot" trucks. These vehicles contain both refrigeration and heating units so that meals are delivered to the clients' homes at the appropriate temperature.
In addition to providing nutritious food, Meals-On-Wheels serves as a safety net for homebound clients. If it is evident that a client has been injured or becomes ill, the emergency contact or appropriate authorities are notified. Community Action Meals-On-Wheels is a vital service that allows elderly clients to enjoy independent lives, as well as provide necessary nutrition for children at critical developmental stages.
You can help as a volunteer and through financial donations. See the information below for details.

The Second Harvest Foodbank of Southeastern Ohio
The Second Harvest Foodbank of Southeastern Ohio is a large warehouse operation that receives surplus food donations from major food manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers and then channels this food to charitable feeding organizations throughout ten counties in southeastern Ohio. Our mission is to channel surplus food to those who do not have enough, with a goal of making a positive difference in their lives. The foodbank currently distributes food to over 200 food pantries, soup kitchens, and congregate meal sites. In 2005, the foodbank supplied over 7.9 million pounds of food to those feeding organizations that are in the front line of helping families meet their basic food needs.
The Second Harvest Foodbank of Southeastern Ohio is one of 196 Second Harvest Regional Foodbanks throughout the United States and Puerto Rico affiliated with America’s Second Harvest. It is estimated that nearly 97 billion pounds of edible food are wasted each year by Americans, and that approximately 30 million Americans are in danger of going hungry. Foodbanks have the resources to receive edible food that would have otherwise been wasted, from growers, manufacturers, retailers, and processors, in order to distribute it to local charitable agencies.
Here is a list of member agencies that we supply with food resources. Whatever the need, they may be able to assist. Call for information or to volunteer.

Energy Assistance
The Southeastern Ohio Regional Food Center houses another vital program to provide assistance to families in need--the Home Energy Assistance Program, commonly known as H.E.A.P. This program provides income eligible families with winter heating and summer cooling assistance to help them cope with ever increasing utility costs.
The Southeastern Ohio Regional Food Center serves as a branch office for Hocking . Athens . Perry Community Action and can help citizens access all of the services Community Action offers.
You Can Help!
While the programs at the Regional Food Center strive to help all of those in need, there is still much work to be done. With the number of people going hungry, and the number of services to help feed them diminishing, it is hard to meet the demands. If you would like to help either the Second Harvest Foodbank of Southeastern Ohio, or the Meals-On-Wheels Senior Nutrition program with a monetary donation, please send it to the following address:
Hocking . Athens . Perry Community Action
P.O. Box 220
Glouster, Ohio 45732
Make checks payable to: HAP Community Action
You can designate your gift for the Foodbank or Meals-On-Wheels program or allow us to apply it where it's most needed.
You can also make a donation to an individual or a meal site being served by the Meals-On-Wheels program, or to a member agency being served by the Second Harvest Foodbank of Southeastern Ohio. It’s called Neighbors Feeding Neighbors. Contact us for more information: (740) 385-6813 or (800) 385-6813
We also need VOLUNTEERS!
Volunteers are a critical part of our operation. Our tradition of volunteers helps us deliver hot meals to our homebound customers. Volunteers also sort through salvage food that would have otherwise been sent to the landfill. You can volunteer and make a difference in someone's life.
Your help would be greatly appreciated in any of the following areas:
Salvage worker, kitchen aide, tour guide, office/clerical aide, special project worker, receptionist, janitorial/custodial worker, vehicle maintenance worker, horticultural manager, information center receptionist, laundry worker.
If you want to make a difference and become part of the team or just want more information, call or e-mail Marilyn Sloan at the Southeastern Ohio Regional Food Center at 1-800-385-6813 ext. 246. Become a part of the team in the fight against hunger.
