Banfield Charitable Trust Grant Helps Feed Pets

In September 2012, Hocking Athens Perry Community Action Regional Food Bank and Kitchen  received a $1,200 grant through Banfield Charitable Trust to continue the distribution of pet food to our homebound elderly Meals on Wheels clients’ animals. The pet food is provided as a supplement meal for the animals and is distributed utilizing the Meals on Wheels Program. This is a renewal grant for the pet food distribution program that began in 2011.

Every month clients of the program receive a free delivery of pet food for their companion. The mission of this program is to help keep people and their pets together by eliminating one of the logistical and  financial impediments to proper pet care.

In addition to this grant HAPCAP Regional Food Center has partnered with Athens-based Friendly Paws Pet Supplies & Grooming, Banfield Pet Hospital (Reynoldsburg), and PetSmart (Reynoldsburg).  Locally owned Friendly Paws allows the Pet Food Program to order quality food at cost and donates biscuits and other items to supplement the program. The Banfield Pet Hospital and PetSmart location holds an annual Holiday pet food drive that provides food for the Program.

This past year the Program teamed up with the HAPCAP Logan Transit program and The Pet Orphanage (Logan) to provide pet food to individuals with financial need who may not qualify for the Meals on Wheels Program. In addition to helping feed hungry pets, The Pet Orphanage also sponsors cat and dog spay and neuter clinics in an effort to reduce overpopulation.

The renewal of this grant, in addition to the partnerships and private donations, has allowed the HAPCAP Pet Food Distribution Program to serve 130 animals. With continued support the program would like continue to serve those who already benefit from the program as well as expand to more clients in need.
