Athens Public Transit

Athens Public Transit has been running since the early 1990s with an operations staff of 10 drivers, one mechanic and two administrative personnel.  To this core group HAPCAP now adds the expertise of its transportation management staff; we began managing the system as designated grantee at the beginning of 2012.

APT now runs five routes Monday-Friday and four routes on Saturdays.

  • Route 1 -the Early Bird Special is a high-frequency commuter route through uptown Athens and south campus operating in the first hour and a half of the day.
  • Routes 2 and 3 are overlapping routes to offer a cross-town bus every half hour to the East State Street Shopping District.
  • Route 4 serves The eastern half of Ohio University’s campus, The Mill Street and Near East Side neighborhoods, and a small portion of the far south side.
  • Route 5 serves west Athens and The Plains, with outbound service on Columbus Road and inbound service on West Union St.

All vehicles are built to ADA standards to better serve patrons with disabilities.

How to use APT

All of central Athens is a fixed stop zone: drivers will only stop at marked bus stops, so please wait for the bus at an APT sign or shelter.
(Download a map here, from our website or pick one up at the locations above to see fixed stop locations.)

Outlying portions of our service area are hail zones: you can wave the bus down anywhere along the route in these zone and the driver will stop at the nearest safe location.

Climb the steps and deposit your money in the fare box before moving to your seat.  Please bring exact cash fare, as drivers do not carry change.

Deviations of up to ¾ of a mile from the regular route may be scheduled by calling in advance – we require 24 hours notice to provide this special service.

Patrons in wheelchairs may use the powered lift located at the back of the bus with the assistance of a driver.

There are racks for bicycles located on the front of the bus.
